Back in 2008, I was happily trying to continue building my businesses and control the exponential growth we had experienced.
I then went on a business seminar in San Diego. You know, the kind where business owners pay £10,000 a year to be in a business mentoring programme.
I was there because the pitch for joining was “We’ll guarantee that you will make at least an extra £1million per year”.
I couldn’t refuse to join with a guarantee like that, could I?
I found myself in a room full of 17 business owners from the UK, with a combined turnover of something like £50 million.
Everyone went around the table and described their business to everyone else, how they had got there, where they wanted to go, what their problems were…
As usual (for me) I was sat there with my Mac checking each of the businesses online whilst they were talking.
In EVERY instance, I found fundamental problems with their websites.
I couldn’t help by say things like:
“Did you do any keyword research for this site before you had it built?”
“Do you know what on-page SEO is?”
“Have you got a blog?”
“Are you using Twitter?”
“Have you got an email collection device on every page?”
“Have you tested any elements of your web pages to increase conversion rates?”
“Have you produced any video for your business and put it on YouTube?”
“Do you know where you rank on Google for your main keyword?”
“Do you know how many people are searching for what you sell online every day?”
“Have you done any article marketing”
…and so on.
The answer to almost every question I asked was (drum roll…): “No”.
And these were some of the smartest entrepreneurs I had ever met.
People willing to pay thousands and thousands to get to the next level, to eke out that next piece of critical information to explode their business.
Guess what?
Almost all of them came up to me in the bar and asked me if they would help them with their online marketing.
This was a HOT market, and one I had never thought of entering.
Why?
Because it had just never entered my head that any entrepreneur out there (like me) had not taken the internet marketing bull by the horns and exploited the true power of marketing their business online.
It just never occurred to me that people wouldn’t do that.
Information Overload
I have since learned the reason for this.
Most business owners are busy doing what they do best: business.
Most are experts in the products or services they provide.
Most think marketing is either
- Expensive
- Different for them because their business is “different” (a big fallacy)
- A necessary evil
When it comes to Internet Marketing, there are just thousands of sites out there making all sorts of outrageous claims.
Once you step into this arena, information overload is rapidly achieved.
The next problem is Paralysis by Over-analysis.
Ultimate result: nothing.
This is why, when thinking about how to help these people in San Diego, I decided to hold a clinic.
A small clinic limited to just six businesses held over two days.
Day One would be a complete brain dump from me on what works and why.
Day Two would be a complete breakdown of their existing websites and an action plan to help it perform quickly.
I did the first one of these back in October, in Manchester, UK (I don’t like to be away from my kids if I can possibly avoid it).
